Think about why you workout (that’s if you do)… is it to look a certain way or is it to feel a certain way? That’s the difference between working out for wellness versus working out for abs, a bigger butt etcetera.

The media bombards us with idealised perceptions of what a person should look like when they are fit and healthy. But the mental, emotional and spiritual well being of individuals is almost always overlooked or disregarded.

What Wellness Means

To me, wellness is the holistic integration of physical, mental and spiritual well being. It’s essentially actively taking care of our body, mind and soul. With an understanding that none is inferior to the other.

Wellness is more than being free from disease and illness, it is more than the way we look. It goes beyond the confines of general health. It includes a positive outlook on our mind, body and soul and is something we have more control over than our health.

Wellness has different dimensions and can be viewed as a state, quality or process.

Why Wellness Matters To Me

Everything we do, every thought and emotion we feel relates to our well being and in turn, our well-being directly affects our actions and emotions. It is all connected. Maintaining wellness is crucial to living a higher quality of life and increase life satisfaction, meaning we are happier in life. It is important to continuously achieve optimal wellness in order to reduce the risk of illness, subdue stress and ensure positive interactions in our lives among many things.

Before taking care of my mind, body as well as my soul, life was a little harder to handle. I focused on a lot of external factors. Completely consumed by what everybody else looked like or what they were doing and so forth. Trying to meet perceived unrealistic external expectations. it was just a vicious cycle eating away at me.

But now a lot has already transformed in my life and some only starting to transform as of recent because I practice wellness every day of my life now. I now not only workout to look a certain way, but to look after my physical and most importantly my mental health. Nor do I do things that don’t fulfil me, I now actively work on my mindset and my perception of things around me with a holistic approach.

I am not perfect and this journey is not meant to be perfect either, but I cherish every moment and the experience of gradual (hopefully positive) change in my life.

When we all are a lot kinder to ourselves first & most importantly and look after all the dimensions of us as a human, only then can we talk about true health and a fulfilling life.

Starting A Wellness Journey

Before starting a wellness journey, you have to take a look at where you currently are right at this moment. What it is that you need right now and where you want to be. Honest self-awareness is important.

The best way to do this is by writing it out in a notebook. Ask yourself questions such as, ‘what makes me feel happy and fulfilled?’ ‘What is no longer serving me?’ ‘When and where can I commit to my wellness practice each day?’ (be specific), ‘What are a few healthy or positive habits I am willing to commit to in my wellness practice?’

No two journeys will look the same so how you go about your wellness journey will be entirely personal and unique to you. And it takes time, changing doesn’t happen smoothly and conveniently. It is our own job to keep ourselves on the path and continuously commit for our better selves. Wellness is a lifestyle, meaning it is about consistency.

You must start where you are with small practices and steps first and then you can build on them over time.

Ways To Practice Wellness In Your Day To Day

There are simple wellness habits and routines one can incorporate in their daily lives. But there are also some more complex and difficult changes one may need to incorporate.

Here’s a list of some examples you can invest in your wellness.

  • Meditation
  • Reading
  • Pick up journaling. Writing our thoughts down can be mentally refreshing.
  • De-clutter
  • Stay hydrated
  • Embrace nature
  • Mind who you spent the most time with. Our environment influences us more than we may think.
  • Create a morning routine and night routine
  • Give yourself a break when you need it.
  • Find workouts you love, incorporating physical activity does not need to be a dreadful experience.
  • Eat clean as best you can
  • Cultivate a growth mindset
  • Notice and replace negative habits and patterns.
