I’m sure all our moms have gone on a hunt for the best bargain of a product. Spending hours comparing stores and brands. Just saving those few cents or dollars becomes a priority and once they find the one with the best value it’s a “score!” Now what if I told you that you do this on a daily basis, just maybe not with soaps or oats? Instead we compare ourselves with each other and I have been a victim and a witness of this.
Last year after our reports came out, I was blessed to be fourth overall in my grade. I was ecstatic and thanked God for proving to me how important a prayer life is. One thing that really bothered me was how some people said congratulations to me, like one of my best friends told me how she wished she were me so that her parents could for once be proud of her. This really awoke the topic to my mind as I have never realised how far comparison could affect a person’s life. I thought to myself that the only reason she wasn’t proud of her successes when she did her best was because she felt like she was living in the shadow of others. That must be draining, to keep on pressuring yourself just because you aren’t as good of a “bargain”.
Then as we all thought, social media plays a role in this as well. Body vs body, personality vs personality, possessions vs possessions. We become confused between adoring and comparing. We often say I wish I had her/his figure, I wish I was as outgoing as he/she is, I wish my house was as modern as hers/his. I would classify these as comparing ourselves to others as we have something different from what they have. This could be a factor of why our generation lacks self-love and contentment. The reason for the devil winning us over.
Anything that steals your inner peace is ungodly for the Lord says the fruit of the spirit is peace.
It is most certainly true that you reap what you sow, and if all that you think about is how you’re not someone else, how will God ever be able to work through you? How will you develop a story? How will you be able to share the lesson from your mistakes like I am doing now? God gave us all different journeys for a reason, so that we can learn from each other, not to compare and judge the different measures of progress and growth. We should be more inspired than spiteful, less “I wish” and more prayers should take place.
Let the same God who blessed the person you compared yourself to work through you, for He doesn’t look for a bargain. God branded you with a journey, yet the only difference is that you’re priceless. Once you realize this and take it to heart, you’ll see that being different is so beautiful and raw (remember opposites attract). Once I stopped putting pressure on myself to be like others God showed me how contentment brings inner beauty. I didn’t look at others for what they had but rather for what they could teach me about myself. God wanted to use me to help others.
I would never be writing this if I didn’t let God guide my journey His way instead of a guide on how to be a model.
Be like a flower, never think of comparing yourself with someone else, instead just bloom.
4 There are different kinds of spiritual gifts, but the same Spirit is the source of them all. 5 There are different kinds of service, but we serve the same Lord. 6 God works in different ways, but it is the same God who does the work in all of us. 7 A spiritual gift is given to each of us so we can help each other.
