If you’re looking for a guide on how to start a blog, you’ve come to the right place. Why do I say that? Afterbreak magazine is run by 2 girls who both have blogs, awesome right?
We’ll be focusing on Blogger and WordPress today because they are the most popular platforms.
Let’s get started.
If you’re starting a blog, you should know what your blog will be about. If you don’t, you shouldn’t be starting a blog; think about it thoroughly first. If you need help finding your niche, check out other blogs that you enjoy reading and observe their niche, would you like to have the same niche? A lifestyle blog is a great idea simply because you don’t have to restrict yourself to a specific topic, like a Fashion or Travel blog. Basically, if it’s related to your life, it’s relevant.
Step 1: Choose a platform
Choosing a platform is the most important part of having a blog. Different platforms call for different skills and attention. WordPress, for example, is one of the best blogging platforms simply because it offers more control at a basic level than many other platforms, while Blogger is the easiest platform to manage a blog on.
When choosing a platform, choose one that you want to keep for a long time, also remember that you will need room to grow the blog in the future so you should choose a flexible platform. With both Blogger and WordPress, you can buy a custom domain for a fee whenever you’re ready.
Step 2: Choosing a domain
Choosing a domain is the second most important step, you should have a few in mind already. Your domain name is your site identity, you should put a lot of thought into it because it isn’t advisable to change it too many times.
If you don’t have an idea in mind, here are a few tips that might help you decide.
•Make sure it is short and easy to type, people should be able to find your blog from simply hearing it being spoken. Avoid numbers and symbols. Also, if people can’t pronounce it, you should probably change it.
•Research the domain in mind to make sure it isn’t already taken. You can check if it’s available here.
•Make it memorable, you don’t want to tell the same person your blog domain 7 times.
•Lastly, you can use your name as your blog domain, add a tweek to it and it should work.
Step 3: Customizing your blog
When it comes to customizing your blog, WordPress has the best options for both themes, widgets and plugins (only for custom domains). WordPress themes are a lot more professional and clean-cut than Blogger themes, which are a little less professional.
When choosing a theme, choose a user friendly one, readers should find it easy to navigate your site. Look at the features and widgets that different themes have, make a list of the ones you want to have on your site and work from there. On WordPress, you can filter theme searches by features. Don’t use a bloated theme!
Don’t forget to check the theme thoroughly, it helps to view a live demo of a theme before applying it.
Step 4: Create!
Ahead of starting a blog, think about how often you want to publish content. You can publish a post daily, or more weekly, the options are endless. Have at least 4 to 5 posts ready to share. If you’re not sure what to post, look at other blogs in your niche or search for blog post ideas in your niche on Pinterest.
Step 5: Have Fun!
Don’t stress about it too much, have fun! Post what you’re passionate about and what makes you happy or else there’ll be no fun in it.
